Here and Now

Hello!! I thought for sure that I wrote something in May but it seems to be missing so I'll recap what i said. I'm now in Jacksonville we found a lovely three bedroom house to rent less than a mile from the proton center. i am there twice a day. In the morning i have proton radiation to all the sinuses and right after that photon radiation to the neck area. Then I'm usually free until 5:30 when i return for the second proton. the folks here couldn't be nicer, more professional or more thorough. They tell me i should feel good the first 2 weeks and then some nasal congestion, fatigue and dry mouth. I'll start the cisplatin once a week also. I'm counting on the nutrition, juicing and supplements to carry me through like they did for the past chemo. Doc says unlikely I will need a gastric tube, yea!!

We are less than a mile from Jacksonville landing which is a large complex of shops and restaurants on the st johns river and so we have scouted it out thoroughly. Then there are cute shops and restaurants in riverside which is about 2 miles away. The YMCA is there. I've already joined and yesterday did weights and a yoga class. Hope to do something there each day. Tom says I shouldn't look at this as a vacation and time to play that this time here is my "work." Yes, and I've always thought it was great to have fun at work so i shall do both.

Oh, I may have mentioned that two of my friends agreed to accompany me to each radiation session. So each day I walk in with grace and dignity, one on each arm. Say prayers for Ted Kennedy, that man has to be just terrified and needs all the strength and courage he can muster. love you, MC

The 3rd MRI results are in. The cancer is gone. You heard me. Packed up and left. Flew the coop. Tell it while you're walkin'. According to the radiologist and Dr. O'Malley, "there's no evidence of cancer." A PET scan will be done this Friday to confirm results of the MRI. While MC will still need proton radiation to ensure that no individual cancer cells remain, there will be no anterior craniotomies happenin' in this here family. Instead, MC will have outpatient endoscopic sinus surgery to take a few biopsies for safe measure and clean out her sinuses which, unrelated to the SNUC, have been clogged for years. More to come from the superhero herself......

Finally, a decision

Hi, I'm back from the perfect vacation at the perfect time. I enjoyed the sun, the beach, kayaking, and never gave a thought to the other. Good thing, because when I got home and saw the Dr. at Penn, he of course identified the next step as radiation and chemo. When I asked if instead of doing that he would be willing to "follow me" - after all he can take a little scope and go up and look around quite easily - he said that he would, but would prefer that i have more surgery to remove the dura separating the sinus from the brain, go up and sample the brain and build a new dura. Then he would watch me monthly. After much hemming, hawing, talking with friends who have had cancer, a cancer coach, and an alternative cancer specialist, I have decided to go ahead with the proton radiation and cisplatin chemo for a 6 week period in Florida.
